Ellis Belk was formed in 1987 by Brian Ellis and Jeff Belk. When Jeff left in 1997 he was replaced by Rod Mathieson who was joined shortly afterwards by Andrew Palmer. In 2001 Ellis Belk took over a rival Practice, which Rod separately managed for several years. That company’s reputation was built around affordable housing whilst Ellis Belk leant much more towards private development and the commercial market sectors. In 2006 the two offices were merged, cementing Ellis Belk’s position as a formidable force in the local construction industry. In September 2014 Rod and Andy took over the business.
What Are We?
At our root, we are a firm of Chartered Building Surveyors, members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. This gives us a unique perspective on the construction industry because we can both design, and project manage schemes.
Project management is a particular forté because not only do we understand current construction technology and buildability, we also see things from the designers’ viewpoint and often provide added value to clients compared, for example, to surveyors with a Quantity Surveying background. For more information about the role of the Chartered Building Surveyor click here to link to the RICS website.
What makes us different?
First and foremost we aim to be the best at what we do; this is our mission statement.
Secondly, we try to offer added value to clients and the rest of the team. Rod, and Andy are the two principle surveyors and between 70+ years experience between them on an incredibly wide range of projects and commissions. We use this experience to steer clients around potential problems for the benefit of the whole team.
Geographical Area
We cover most of Southern England and currently have projects and commissions spanning from London to Bristol, continuing down to the south coast as far afield as Cornwall. Having said this, for certain clients we are prepared to go much further and have project managed and designed multi-million pound schemes in places such as Perth (Scotland), Ipswich, North Wales, and Plymouth.
Staff Development and Training
We are RICS accredited to run the APC Training Programme and currently have members of staff working towards full RICS membership.
We are prepared to offer day-release facilities to staff (depending on the specific circumstances) and offer every employee a generous allowance towards further training and personal development.
Quality Assurance
We have been independently assessed to ISO 9001:2008, an accreditation we have held since April 2003.
Sadly even we don’t always get it right though, but we do constantly strive to improve the quality of our service and we have embraced Dr Deming's approach to this.
Ellis Belk is regulated by the RICS and is registered with the Surveyors Ombudsman Service.
We aim to follow the guidance set down by the Campaign for Plain English when producing our letters and reports although this is still in its infancy. In fact, this website has been scanned by Drivel Defence, software produced by the Campaign for Plain English.
Equality and Diversity
We have embedded the principles of diversity into all that we do, including the relationship with our clients and end users and our approach to the built environment:
We believe in treating everyone fairly and consistently irrespective of their gender, marital status, age, sexual orientation, race, colour, nationality, religion, belief or disability. This also means taking into account the needs of all sections of the community and relates to our services in areas such as:
• Respect for residents/end users – e.g. scheduling property visits to suit residents and other end users, not necessarily ourselves.
• Scheduling works to accommodate religious holidays
• Design of the built environment to suit the needs of a diverse community.
As construction professionals we recognise the different values and needs of such groups as wheelchair users, the elderly, disabled people, young people, women, children and ethnic minorities. This relates to the design both of buildings and of the areas around buildings and includes the provision of physical access for people with mobility needs.
